Michael Whitney

Michael Whitney heads adaptive technology and accessible web creation for Disability Support Services at SIUC and is also the coordinator of the Adaptive Computer Technology & Website Design HECA grant project. In addition to his MA in Rehabilitation, Whitney has completed training on designing universally acceptable web resources and an assistive technology applications certificate program offered by the State University of California Northridge. He will discuss and demonstrate some of the common adaptive technologies utilized by students with disabilities.

Expected Topics of Discussion

A new workshop has been developed to teach the basics of Web page accessibility. It is tailored to the needs and policies at SIUC. With the coming implementation of campus Web page Accessibility standards, its important for all offices to have someone up-to-date in this matter.

Topics will include:

• The importance of Web accessibility
• An overview of assistive technology
• How to assess the accessibility of your existing pages using Bobby
• Federal Section 508 policy as it applies to Web pages
• How to repair accessibility issues using A-Prompt

This 50 minute workshop will be offered on:

• Wednesday January 26th, 2005
• Wednesday February 16th, 2005
• Tuesday March 8, 2005
• Thursday March 21, 2005
• Monday May 02, 2005
